MORPHEUS HRV CHEST STRAP- Your Simple Guide to Measuring HRV
Why are we measuring HRV?
Heart Rate Variability (HRV) measures the tiny changes in time between your heartbeats. It gives us a window into how your autonomic nervous system is responding to stress and recovery. The focus here is NOT your “heart rate”, we are studying the “variability” between beats. Your body is constantly balancing two sides of the nervous system:
- Sympathetic nervous system: your "fight-or-flight" system
- Parasympathetic nervous system: your "rest-and-digest" system
When your body is under stress—whether from emotional stress, poor sleep, intense exercise, illness, alcohol, travel, or other physical stressors—your nervous system may shift toward a more sympathetic state. HRV can help us see these changes and offer feedback of your internal stress level.
Generally, a higher HRV relative to your own normal baseline suggests better recovery and greater flexibility of the nervous system = healthier. A lower HRV may indicate that your body is experiencing more stress or has not fully recovered. This drop in HRV correlates with disease risk including heart disease.
The most important thing is your personal trend—not comparing your HRV to someone else's number. Morpheus recommends taking the measurement consistently, ideally in the morning, because HRV can change throughout the day.
WHAT YOU NEED
You will need:
✓ Your Morpheus M7 chest strap
✓ Your smartphone
✓ The Morpheus Training app
✓ A few quiet minutes in the morning (2.5 minutes)
You will NOT need to use the workout/training features of the app for our purposes.
Our goal is simply to obtain your HRV reading consistently – at REST, not during exercise.
STEP 1 — DOWNLOAD THE MORPHEUS APP
iPhone
- Open the App Store.
- Search for Morpheus Training.
- Download the app from Morpheus Labs.
Android
- Open Google Play.
- Search for Morpheus Training.
- Download the app from Morpheus Labs.
The current app is called Morpheus Training.
STEP 2 — CREATE YOUR ACCOUNT
Open the Morpheus Training app.
Follow the prompts to:
- Select that you have a Morpheus M7 heart rate monitor.
- Tap Create Account.
- Enter your email address.
- Create a password.
- Enter your name and basic profile information.
- Complete the initial setup questions.
Some of the information Morpheus asks for is used to personalize its recovery/training features.
STEP 3 — PUT ON YOUR CHEST STRAP
The M7 needs to be worn correctly in order to turn on and collect an accurate reading.
Placement
- Put the strap around your chest.
- Position the transmitter just below your chest/breast tissue, centered over the lower portion of your sternum.
- Make sure the strap is snug but comfortable.
- Snap the M7 transmitter onto the strap.
- A little dab of water on the chest sensors will help create a better connection.
Important: The M7 turns on when it is being worn correctly. To turn it off simply unfasten one of the snaps that hold the monitor in place.
STEP 4 — TAKE YOUR HRV READING
The best time: MORNING
For the most consistent readings:
Take your HRV measurement approximately 10–30 minutes after waking.
Before your reading:
- Avoid caffeine
- Avoid nicotine
- Don't eat
- Don't exercise
- Don't talk
- Don't scroll on your phone
- Sit or lie quietly
- Try to stay relaxed
Consistency is more important than perfection.
Try to measure your HRV under similar conditions each day.
STEP 5 — OPEN MORPHEUS
Open the Morpheus Training app. From the home screen:
Tap: CHECK RECOVERY
Morpheus will first take you through a short questionnaire.
For our purposes, the important part is the HRV measurement.
Complete the prompts until you reach the heart-rate monitor connection screen.
STEP 6 — CONNECT YOUR M7
When prompted:
- Tap Connect HR Monitor.
- Select your Morpheus M7 from the list.
- Wait for the M7 to connect.
Your M7 has a unique identification number on the back of the sensor. This can help you identify your device if multiple heart-rate monitors are nearby.
You may also select the option to make your M7 your default device, which can make future connections easier.
STEP 7 — START THE HRV TEST
Once your M7 is connected:
- Wait until your heart rate is relatively stable.
- Tap Start Test.
- The app will first stabilize your heart rate.
- The actual HRV measurement takes approximately 2½ minutes.
During the test:
RELAX.
- Don't talk.
- Don't move around.
- Don't eat.
- Don't look at your phone.
- Breathe normally.
- Don't intentionally change your breathing.
- Ideally, close your eyes and simply relax.
Morpheus specifically recommends avoiding watching the screen during the test because seeing the numbers can unintentionally influence your breathing or create anxiety.
STEP 8 — RECORD YOUR HRV
When the test is complete, your HRV result will be displayed in the app.
This is the number we care about: YOUR HRV
The HRV number reported by the APP is on a scale of 1-100. It takes into account your reported sleep and soreness scores so the end result is not truly an “rmssd” HRV reading that might compare to an Elite HRV test. Scoring is simple: wherever you are now, work to improve. The target is to get this number above 85. Between 70 and 85 is reasonably good but shows that some improvement can be had. If your reading is <70 this shows significant stress on the body and a search for cause is engaged. If <50 this reflects severe challenge and the need for immediate and significant recognition of the problems driving it.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I MEASURE?
Consistency is key.
Ideally, take your HRV measurement at approximately the same time each morning and under similar conditions. We are looking for patterns and trends over time, rather than becoming concerned about one unusual reading.
For example:
WHAT CAN AFFECT HRV?
HRV can be influenced by many forms of stress on the body, including:
- Poor or insufficient sleep
- Psychological/emotional stress
- Intense exercise or lack of exercise.
- Inadequate recovery
- Illness or infection
- Alcohol
- Dehydration
- Travel/jet lag
- Significant changes in routine
- Other physical stressors
This is why HRV should be interpreted as a trend and in the context of how you are feeling.
Once you have secured a couple weeks of data it can be helpful to review it together. Make any notes on days that show unusual trend up or down. What was different that day or the 2 days leading up to it. This tool is amazing at predicting the direction and general demeanor of your health.
