Changing Habits - Reinventing Myself   Part 1

Creating a new experience:  rewiring my brain for a new life.

Who we are, our very existence is shaped by our beliefs. We develop our beliefs based on past experiences, some of which we chose but many of which were simply handed to us by circumstance or by other people in our life. These beliefs lead us to take certain action. These actions further shape who we become. But at any point in this process, we all hold the ability to re-examine our beliefs and our actions and make a decision as to whether our currently held beliefs are serving us, or are they holding us back. At any time, we are all capable of making stark definitive changes in long held beliefs. This article is the definitive process for HOW you can do that.

If the pain of making change seems greater than the pain of staying where we are then we will stay put and not venture out. All that is needed for change to occur is to create a path for change that appears less painful than the pain we are currently enduring.

If you create a vision of what you want and infuse this vision with passion and belief, and revisit that vision daily until it feels real then it will become real. It will replace old ideas and become your new reality. But it takes effort and consistency. The “HOW” is discussed below in great actionable detail. If you have been talking about making a change but lacked results, then stop talking about it and start taking action. Break the mold of the old self and reinvent the NEW self. You must be willing to DIE in order to be reborn as the new self. Willing to create a new personality, in order to experience a new reality.

We THINK we know what happened 5 minutes ago, yesterday, or last year but our brain is great at filling in details “we desire” versus the facts. Or sometimes filtering what we saw and heard through past experiences and thus creating a strong bias that can be in our favor but just as often, NOT in our favor. We very rarely live in the real world and see it as it truly is. Far too often we shade and color the perceptions of our existence. Studies show that we often create most of our own pain by giving a negative slant to how we think the world sees us, judges us, and talks about us. Or we overestimate our importance, stature, and position to fuel our ego. All of this mental activity drives beliefs (good or bad) and thus our actions. The goal is to take a more active control of our beliefs through self-examination.

Are you a robot, sleep-walking through this world, repeating the same actions, thoughts and behaviors that have been hardwired into you through PAST experiences? If we never become truly AWAKE and AWARE, then we will come to the end of our days without ever reaching our true potential. This has nothing to do with money or power or any of that superficial stuff. Your potential for being fully human, fully conscious, and truly happy in this life depends on you developing a path to meet it.  To do so we need to break out of our coma, habits and redundant patterns and take on a new mindset. Relax. This is not brainwashing from some cult leader. This is YOU reprogramming YOU. You get to be the best version of you, and this is the fastest way to get there.

If we don’t intentionally rewire our mind then our old

habitual choices, emotions, and actions

will lead us to a hard-wired unconscious prison.

Overview of the process – 5 critical steps

Creating a vision for the future that you are emotionally excited about requires each of 5 critical pieces: Vision – Emotion – Action – Rehearsal – Acceptance.

  • VISION:  Create a new version of yourself with a whole new future. SEE it.
    • This is your “Mission statement”. It needs to be rich with emotion, color and passion. If you have not yet written your Mission Statement, then please see the the Mind Body Mission course on HippEvo.com for guidance.
    • For now, let’s simply focus on ONE habit that you wish to change.
    • Write it down.  Write it with specific and fine details to make it REAL.
    • I will walk you through that process in examples that appear below.
  • EMOTION:  Emotion is key. An elevated state of emotion is critical for change.
    • Generate energy through emotion in order to create new circuits in the brain. Get excited. If you’re not excited, then it means that you don't really want this.
    • This energy is required when you WRITE the vision out. Emotion is needed in the writing of your new direction or change. This is your life we are talking about so it deserves as much energy and emotion as you can generate.
    • Fall in love with your vision of the change you are about to make. Believe in it. Expect it to happen. This is going to be awesome. A directional change that will improve not only your life but this world as you re-enter humanity offering a better energy.

  • ACTIONS:   Clear intention for different actions and different emotions.
    • Your new habit will require new actions on your part. What actions are you willing and able to engage in order to bring your new habit to life?
    • How am I going to act, speak and behave in my new paradigm. Write it down in detail that makes sense to you. You are the only author and executor of these actions so make them YOURS.
    • Envision the actions that will be needed in order for you realize the change that you are seeking. See them clearly in your mind and then write them down in detail. Examples are provided below.
  • REHEARSE:  Rehearsing this vision - relive it over and over until its real.
    • Rehearse those actions in your mind ahead of time. You are familiar with the actions and behaviors that have led to pain and disappointment in your past so target them specifically. Write them down in detail so you become acutely aware of them. Awareness is the first step.
    • Rehearsal involves quieting the mind, close your eyes and SEE the new ideas, actions and emotions you have written down come to life. Rehearse how you will behave when that challenging situation presents itself. Examples below.
    • Rehearse this in your mind over and over and over until it is your default mode action. It has to FEEL REAL. So automatic that it is in fact AUTOMATIC.

    • Mental rehearsal has been studied and been proven to be a powerful tool. When Michael Jordan or Tiger Woods report stories of visualization we nod in amazement. It is time to engage this tool for our own development. Breath it in.
  • ACCEPTANCE:  accept fully that this is REAL. This is the new me.
    • Believe that this version of you already exists and you are simply allowing that energy to enter and occupy you. Step into it.
    • Play the future in your mind over and over. Repetition, over and over, so that the body is prepared for the experience. Prime the body for it. See it and FEEL it.

You now have a view of what is required. If any of it feels excessive then perhaps you simply aren’t quite ready to make this change. But if you are still curious and interested then know that engaging this process absolutely guarantees you the ability to change any habit you can envision. You can change or modify ANY belief.

UNCOMFORTABLE:  Be comfortable with being UNcomfortable.

This new way of living and feeling is unfamiliar and scary. Change is always scary. Accept that this discomfort is a part of the process and will fade as you get further along. Stay excited and ready for change. Your OLD EGO will not easily accept this new paradigm. It will fight you to “go back” to what is familiar and safe. Your ego will convince you that “This new idea is threatening and scary”. Your ego says, “Better to be safe and miserable than to explore new possibility”. Your ego lives to create your pain. Just stay aware to it’s presence and don't allow it to sabotage your new direction.

You are ready to begin. Start by writing down what is the broad issue that you wish to address? Common examples are:

  • I want to lose weight. I need to learn to eat better.
  • I’m tired of feeling out of shape. I want to develop a more consistent exercise routine.
  • I drink too much alcohol – I feel addicted. I want to eliminate alcohol in order to protect my brain, and reduce my cancer risk.
  • Stress sucks. I want ease and flow to fill my days as I leave stress behind.
  • Depression sucks. I want to feel the happiness that seems just out of reach.

Move on to Part 2 for direct examples and deeper instruction. You got this. Decide that you are worth the effort and get excited to experience the li
